Herat: In Afghanistan’s province of Herat, the number of casualties from the earthquake that occurred yesterday has exceeded 2,000. According to Afghan authorities, the intensity of the earthquake in the province of Herat was recorded at 6.3, which caused severe damage to infrastructure, and aftershocks were also felt in Badghis and Farah provinces.
It was reported by Afghan authorities that as a result of the earthquake, around 1,000 individuals were injured, while over 2,000 lost their lives. According to a government spokesperson, as a result of the earthquake, more than 600 houses were destroyed in 12 villages of Herat’s Zendeh Jan and Ghoryan districts, and 4,200 individuals were affected. Search and rescue operations are underway to evacuate more people from the rubble.
The government spokesperson further explained that the casualties from the unfortunate earthquake are quite high, and the terrified residents of Herat are on the streets due to the earthquake.
On the other hand, the spokesperson for the Afghanistan Disaster Management Authority, Mullah Janan Saighani, expressed concern about the possibility of more casualties under collapsed buildings in Malbaye Talay Daba. Additionally, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was 40 kilometers northwest of Herat, and since the earthquake, there have been eight powerful aftershocks, which have also been strongly felt.
It should be noted that last year in June, a record-breaking earthquake occurred in eastern Afghanistan, which was considered the most dangerous earthquake in two decades. It resulted in the loss of over a thousand lives and left nearly 1,500 individuals injured.
