Islamabad: The district and sessions court handed over journalist Muhammad Khalid Jameel, who was arrested yesterday, to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for two days.According to the FIA, journalist Muhammad Khalid Jameel has been taken into custody on charges of spreading incendiary statements against state institutions through social media posts.A picture of journalist Muhammad Khalid Jameel holding a piece of paper with his arrest case number written on it is circulating on social media.ABN News had issued a message on the social media platform ‘X’ last night, confirming that the journalist had been arrested.According to the FIR filed by the FIA, the journalist has been found involved in inciting and propagating state-defaming statements through social media and electronic crimes under Section 20 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), which can result in imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to 1 million rupees for anyone who intentionally and publicly disseminates false information through any platform and believes it to be false and creates panic or fear in the public or causes harm to anyone’s reputation or privacy.Section 505 of the Pakistan Penal Code has also been included in the FIR filed by the FIA.The FIR against the journalist states that the accused deliberately, maliciously, and without basis shared false and misleading information, giving a false interpretation of state-opposed statements, causing fear among the public, and enabling anyone to be prosecuted for any crime against the state or state institutions.The FIA further stated that through such threatening materials, including videos, the accused attempted to incite the public against the judiciary and state institutions, creating a sense of humiliation among the pillars of the state.The authorized authority has granted permission for the inclusion of the FIR, so the case has been registered. Journalists’ associations have strongly condemned Khalid Jameel’s arrest and called for clarity on the reasons behind the arrest. Journalist Maria Memon expressed concern about immediate action by the FIA in the case and highlighted discrepancies in their response to online harassment case.Journalist and columnist Nasrat Javaid questioned the arrest, saying that the government needs to provide a complete and valid statement for the sake of transparency.Another journalist, Mubashir Zaidi, condemned the arrest and called for the immediate release of Khalid Jameel.
