Lahore: Former Federal Minister and renowned lawyer Syed Muhammad (S. M.) Zafar has passed away. S. M. Zafar’s family has confirmed his demise. The late distinguished lawyer was the son of Senator Ali Zafar. According to the family, S. M. Zafar had been unwell for quite some time.
Born on December 6, 1930, in Rangoon, Burma, Senior Advocate and former Law Minister S. M. Zafar was also the author of several books. In addition, he wrote articles on national and international affairs for both local and international publications.
S. M. Zafar served as Pakistan’s Law Minister during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. On September 19, 1965, he conditioned the ceasefire agreement in the United Nations Security Council on the resolution of the Kashmir issue. S. M. Zafar also addressed the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
At the age of 35, S. M. Zafar became the central Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs in the Ayub Cabinet. He achieved success in many important national and international cases and remained a member of the Senate from 2003 to 2012.
Furthermore, from 2004 to 2012, he held the responsibilities of Chancellor at Hamdard University. S. M. Zafar was honored with the Presidential Award of Excellence in 2011.
