Haider Javed Syed: The Torchbearer of Truth and Resistance : A Literary Tribute by Raziuddin Razi

There are writers, and then there are those whose words ignite fires, whose ink flows like the blood of the oppressed, whose pen is not merely a tool of expression but a weapon against silence. Haider Javed Syed belongs to the latter breed—a rare kind of journalist, thinker, and storyteller who does not just chronicle events but lives within the struggles he writes about.
Each time I have met Shah Ji, I have felt as though I am sitting with a fellow traveler from my own tribe—a man who has endured oppression yet raises his voice for those who have lost theirs. He speaks for the ones beaten down by history, silenced by fear, and conditioned into submission. He is not just a journalist of resistance but a keeper of lost voices, a warrior who fights not for himself, but for those who have forgotten how to fight.
    A Pen That Never Surrenders
To be a journalist in Peshawar is no easy feat. A city marked by terror, political turbulence, sectarian divides, and the ever-watchful gaze of the state, where speaking the truth is often an act of defiance, sometimes even a death sentence. But Haider Javed Syed held his ground.
He did not flinch, did not bow, did not compromise.
From Peshawar to Multan, from Lahore to the pages of resistance, his words remained as unyielding as the wind that howls through history’s corridors, carrying the echoes of those who once stood against tyranny. He upheld the sanctity of the written word, never letting power dilute the truth or fear dictate his narrative.
I consider him an authority on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s political landscape, a man whose deep insights and historical awareness shape the way we understand the chaos around us. Whenever a tragedy shakes the land, I find myself turning to his writings—because within them lies not just analysis, but an entire history of struggle, a context that most fail to grasp.
    A Mind That Holds Universes
But Shah Ji is not just a journalist. He is a seeker, a scholar, a wanderer in the boundless landscapes of knowledge. His love for books is not a casual affair but a lifelong devotion—a romance that enriches his words with the depth of history, the wisdom of philosophy, and the brutal honesty of politics.
In his company, one does not merely converse; one journeys through time, through ancient texts, through revolutions, through the forbidden corridors of suppressed truths. His vast knowledge of religion, history, and human struggles makes his writing not just informative, but transformative.
A Legacy That Refuses to Fade
Wherever Haider Javed Syed has been, his soul has remained in Multan. Like the Sufi saints of this ancient city, his connection to Multan is not merely geographical but spiritual. And perhaps that is why, no matter where he resides, he is first and foremost a Multani—a keeper of traditions, a challenger of conventions, a torchbearer of rebellion cloaked in wisdom.
Today, on his birthday, I find myself reflecting on what he represents—not just to me, but to every journalist who still dares to believe in truth, who still writes with a conscience, who still sees words as more than ink on paper.
I know that today, reactionary forces have won in the Multan Union of Journalists elections, but I also know that their victory is temporary. Shah Ji’s battle is not for a moment; it is for an era, a future where journalism reclaims its lost integrity.
We will rebuild the Workers’ Group, we will fight for the rights of journalists, we will ensure that no voice is left unheard.
And we will remember the ones who led us, the ones like Haider Javed Syed, who held the torch when darkness surrounded us.
Because in the end, truth has no expiration date, resistance has no boundaries, and the fight for justice is never in vain.
    Happy Birthday, Shah Ji!
