The highly anticipated second Test between Pakistan and England kicked off today at the Multan Cricket Stadium, with Pakistan winning the toss and opting to bat first. The match is being played on the same pitch as the first Test, which has already begun to deteriorate, creating early challenges for the Pakistani batsmen.
Pakistan’s Shaky Start
Pakistan’s innings got off to a shaky start, as England’s spinner Jack Leach was introduced in the 8th over. Leach made an immediate impact, dismissing Abdullah Shafique, who had been in sublime form with two centuries in the series, including one in the previous match. Shafique was sent back for a low score, leaving Pakistan at just 15 runs for the loss of one wicket.
Shan Masood, another centurion from the first Test, came in next but failed to make an impression. He was also dismissed by Leach in his second over, leaving Pakistan reeling at 15/2. It was an ideal start for England after losing the toss, as they managed to remove two of Pakistan’s key batsmen on a turning track.
Kamran Ghulam’s Test Debut and Saim Ayub’s Partnership
Pakistan’s debutant Kamran Ghulam walked to the crease under immense pressure. Playing his first Test, Ghulam had the weight of expectations on his shoulders but started his innings cautiously. At the other end, Saim Ayub steadily began accumulating runs, and the pair started to rebuild the innings.
Ghulam soon showed intent by hitting Jack Leach for a six, reaching double figures and easing into his debut. Ayub, meanwhile, played sensibly and kept the scoreboard ticking. England had an opportunity to remove Ayub when he was on 35, but a missed runout chance let Pakistan off the hook.
Fast bowler Mathew Potts was brought into the attack in the 26th over, and it became clear that the pitch was inconsistent, with some deliveries staying low. Despite these difficult conditions, Pakistan’s batsmen held firm and ensured no further damage was done before lunch.
By the end of the first session, Pakistan reached 79/2 in 29 overs. Kamran Ghulam and Saim Ayub showed resilience on a tricky surface, but England’s spinners, particularly Jack Leach, remained a constant threat. As the match progresses, both teams will look to make the most of the deteriorating pitch in what promises to be an exciting contest.
Multan Test Day 1 continues with both teams battling on a challenging surface, setting up a highly competitive second session.
