Nawab Shah: During a police and Rangers operation in the village of kacha, located 12 kilometers from Sukkur city in Sindh province, Pakistan, at least three individuals were killed and five others were injured in firing. The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon near Maari Jalbani, a village close to Kache, has seen contrasting positions from local residents and law enforcement agencies.
According to a statement issued from the office of Sindh’s SSP Nawab Shah, law enforcement agencies were conducting an operation to apprehend a suspect in Maari Jalbani near Sukkur. During this operation, villagers attacked the police and Rangers, resulting in injuries to three Rangers personnel. Subsequently, the police and Rangers retaliated with firing, resulting in the death of three individuals and injuries to five others. However, the victims claim that the Rangers opened fire on unarmed individuals.
Following the incident, the deceased and injured individuals were transported to Nawab Shah Hospital via Datsun pickups and Chingchi rickshaws, where the condition of the injured is reported to be critical. On the other hand, residents of Maari Jalbani village, including various political and social organizations from the city, have staged a sit-in protest on the national highway, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and others.SSP Nawab Shah stated that there was resistance during the arrest of the suspect, and during this resistance, Rangers personnel were injured, leading to subsequent firing by the Rangers. A statement has also been issued by a spokesperson for the Rangers, indicating that the operation was carried out based on information from an intelligence agency regarding the presence of dangerous and criminal individuals. It was also mentioned that these suspects were in possession of explosives and weapons.
The spokesperson claims that upon sight, nefarious elements launched an attack on the Rangers and police, resulting in injuries to four Rangers personnel. Rangers maintain that during the retaliatory operation by the police and Rangers, three attackers were killed.
BBC attempted to contact Sindh’s Interior Minister, Brigadier Haris Nawaz, to inquire about the government’s stance on the incident, but no response has been received from his side. However, according to Pakistan’s private television channel Geo News, Provincial Interior Minister Haris Nawaz has stated that the Rangers and police conducted an operation based on information about the presence of a suicide bomber. He said that two suspected individuals were killed during the operation, and four Rangers personnel were injured.
It is clear that in Sindh, operations by the Rangers and police against criminal elements have been ongoing in the Kache area for some time. Haji Gul Jalbani, speaking to BBC, mentioned that “all the people here are small farmers and peasants.” He claimed that “there is no complaint in any police station about any innocent person being killed or injured.”
He further stated, “If there were criminals in the village, at least the police would have a record.” Here, Syed Zain Shah, the President of the nationalist party Sindh United Party, has said that “their voters are being targeted for retaliatory actions.” He rejected the statement by SSP Nawab Shah and demanded that “those involved in the killing of innocent people should be arrested.”
